Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) FTUB always provide valuable knowledge in every meeting. This time, DWP equips its members with knowledge about Eco Printing on Wednesday, February 19, 2020.
“I hope you can bring home new skills that can bring benefits in every meeting, you can developed it into a hobby or business,” said the Head of DWP FTUB, Ir. Diah Ayu Pitojo, MSP.
Presented as the speakers that afternoon, Febi Wahid from Antique Batik Malang and Evi Kurniawati from Reramban. They don’t do it straight away, first, Febi and Evi gave a theory related to the ecoprinting.
Ecoprinting is a natural ingredients based printing and coloring. Typically, Ecoprinting is used for textiles, such as fabrics.
This technique has actually been known for a long time. It’s just that lately it shows economic value since the marketing of its products has succeeded in reaching the wider community, thanks to internet marketing.
“This ecoprint product is very beautiful and has a high economic value so that it sells well in the market. In addition, because it is made with natural materials, the fabric motifs produced will usually always be different even though they still use the same type of leaves from plants which make it unique,” explained Febi Wahid.
On that occasion the DWP members were introduced to two ecoprint methods. First method is by steaming and the second by Pounding/Hapazome.
The first method requires a fairly thorough initial process. The first step preparing the fabric by Scouring & Mordant. Starting with washing the fabric thoroughly and then soaking it in a solution of alum or soda ash overnight.
Not only cloth, the leaves must also be soaked in the same solution for at least 30 minutes, depending on the type of leaf.
“We have prepared the fabric and leaves, you just need to decorate it,” Evi added while distributing the ecoprinting materials to the participants.
The next process is quite easy, on pairs, DWP members arranging leaves on a white cloth, half a part, then covered with the other parts. Then stepped on int to make the leaf motif clearer on the fabric, roll it with a piece of wood, tied it, and steamed for 2 hours.
While waiting for the steaming process to finish, participants are invited to use the second method, that is Pounding/Hapazome. The second method is simpler, participants only need to place the leaf on the fabric and pound while stretch it with the hammer until the leaf motif is printed on the fabric.
“This method is quite easy but also rather tiring, but the results are very satisfying because it can be immediately seen,” Evi said while shoing the participant how to pound the leaf on the fabric.
The final process of the two methods is the same, that is fixation. After being steamed and pounded, cloths that already have a pattern must first be aerated for 3-5 days then soaked with alum/soda ash solution to tie the color to the fabric.
The activity, which was centered in the lobby outside the Main Building of the Faculty of Engineering, was closed by distributing door prizes and group photos. (mic)[:]
